The RYA Coastal Skipper sailing course is an ideal stepping stone between the day skipper sailing course and the full RYA/MCA examination course. It’s aimed at more experienced day skippers and will provide the student with the knowledge to be able to complete more demanding coastal passages, sailing by day and night. The course will cover more complex boat handling, pilotage and passage planning. It is recommended that you have already completed 300 sailing miles, 8 night sailing hours with over 15 days on board and 2 days as Skipper, before embarking on this course. You will require navigation skills at the level of Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory.

After successfuly completing the Coastal Skipper sailing course you will be awarded a RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate, which will enable you to skipper longer coastal passages safely and confidently.

The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course will teach you the sailing skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht on coastal and offshore passages by day and night. It will build and refine your navigation and boat handling skillls. You should all ready be at good Day Skipper standard and have a good knowledge of navigation including secondary port calculations before taking this course.

You should have a minimum of 300 sailing miles logged with 15 days on board (2 days as skipper) and 8 night hours.

  • Boat handling under power and sail (including sailing onto bouys and MOB)
  • Emergency situations
  • Berthing in various conditions of wind and tide
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Crew and boat management

During your sailing course you will visit various marinas, harbours and anchorages in and around the Solent, Hampshire.  You will take charge as Skipper for a short passage during the course.

What’s included in the Coastal Skipper course?

The RYA Coastal Skipper sailing course, like all our courses, is all inclusive and that include berthing fees and fuel, all accommodation on board and all food eaten on board. Our varied menus mean that not only is the food good (see our Trip Advisor reviews) but we cater for most tastes and special dietery requirements.  Good quality Musto foul weather gear is provided free off charge to ensure you stay warm and dry.

On board you will find our training vessel fully equipped and extremely comfortable, pillows and pillow cases are provided. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag.

We do not charge any extra for berthing fees or fuel. We visit various marinas in and around the Solent, which is an Hampshire and also further afield,  where you will find high quality washing and showering facilities, most have free WiFi too. During a 5 day sailing course we may spend an evening at anchor.

In the unlikley event you don’t pass your sailing course first time, we will offer you additional time with us to ensure you pass at no extra cost.

How to book

Once you have decided on which sailing course you would like to attend, there a several ways you can book.

If your course is in more than 6 weeks time you will only be required to pay a 25% deposit, with the balance payable 6 weeks prior to the start of your course. Just choose the deposit option from the drop down before you click on the “Book” button. Use the credit card button to pay by credit or debit card. You can also pay over the phone if you prefer.
