Broad Reach sailing is a Sailing School, based in the Solent at Gosport in Hampshire.  We're committed to ensuring that you not only have the best tuition possible on your sailing course, but your time with us is both memorable and enjoyable. Our training vessel is almost brand new and equipped to the highest standard possible. Our instructors on all sailing courses are patient and supportive and they will ensure you get the most from the course you are attending. Whether you are a complete novice and haven't sailed before, or an aspiring yacht master, we can guarantee that you will thoroughly enjoy your time with us. We offer a range of sailing courses from Day Skipper, Competent Crew, Yachtmaster Offshore or even mile builder sailing trips and all our sailing courses are recognised by the Royal Yacht Association or RYA as it's better known.

Our RYA Sailing Courses are "all inclusive", that means there are absolutely no extras to pay on arrival. We include all meals on board (and if you look at our Trip Advisor reviews, you'll see the food's good to and all meals on board means breakfast, lunch and all evening meals. All berthing costs and on-board accomodation are also included and we provide high quality Musto foul weather clothing should you require this.

  • RYA Competent Crew

    During our RYA Competent Crew sailing course in the Solent,  your instructor will teach you all the basics of sailing a cruising yacht. By the end of the Competent Crew course you will have covered around 100 nautical miles and 4 night sailing hours. You will also have gained the confidence and knowledge to make you a useful crew member on any yacht.  You don't need any previous sailing experience to complete this course.

    The RYA Competent Crew sailing course is 5 days long.  It can be completed as a 5 day course, or a combination of a 2 day module and a 3 day module, depending on your requirements and your availability.

    For the duration of the course you will be living on board the yacht and normally staying in a different location each night. All marinas have very good facilities (showers etc). Likely destinations are Cowes, Lymington, Yarmouth, Hamble, Poole in Dorset, Chichester and lots more.

    You will experience living on board the yacht and really get to know it, as virtually the whole course is hands-on. You are the crew - without you the sails won't go up and the boat won't go anywhere. By the end of this sailing course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout and assist in all the day to day duties on board a yacht. You should also have visited some interesting places and had an enjoyable holiday.

    During the Competent Crew course you will cover

    • Knowledge of sea and sailing terms and parts of the boat, i.e. her rigging and sails
    • Sail handling (hoisting, lowering and trimming)
    • Ropework (knots and rope uses)
    • Safety on board, including personal safety equipment
    • Man overboard drills
    • Use of emergency equipment
    • Rules of the road
    • Sailing etiquette
    • Weather
    • Helmsmanship and sailing
    • General crew duties

    Our RYA Competent Crew sailing courses are all inclusive, so there are no extra charges for marina fees, fuel, food or accomodation! All meals are included and the food is good and varied with menus catering for most tastes and special dietery requirements.  Good quality Musto foul weather gear is provided free off charge to ensure you stay warm and dry.

    On board you will find our training vessel "Aurora" fully equipped and extremely comfortable, pillows and pillow cases are provided. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag.

    We visit various marinas in and around the Solent, which is in Hampshire and we also go further afield. In the marina we visit you will find first-class washing and showering facilities, most have free WiFi too. During a 5 day sailing course we may spend an evening at anchor.

    If your sailing course is in more than 6 weeks time you will only be required to pay a 25% deposit, with the balance payable 6 weeks prior to the start of your course.     Mooring Practice for RYA Day Skipper course - Sailing courses Solent, HampshireThe RYA Day Skipper sailing course covers all aspects of skippering a modern cruising yacht, including boat handling, navigation, pilotage and seamanship skills. You will skipper a short passage during your Day Skipper course under the watchful eye of your instructor and gain the experience and confidence to allow you to skipper a cruising yacht in familiar waters by day. It is recommended that you've already logged over 100NM and have an understanding of basic navigation before booking yourself on the Day Skipper course. This RYA Day Skipper course lasts for 5 days and can be completed over the course of 5 consecutive days, or a combination of a 2 day module and a 3 day module, depending on your availability. 

    The RYA Day Skipper practical course is ideal for sailors who are at good Competent Crew level and have either completed their Day Skipper theory or have sufficient knowledge of sailing at that level. The course will give you the confidence to skipper a medium size cruising yacht in known waters, by day and in good weather. It will show the best way to tackle tricky berthing situations and how to get the best out of your crew and yacht.



    During your course you will visit various marinas and anchorages in an around the Solent. All the marinas have excellent facilities and most have free WiFi. You will also have an opportunity to "Skipper" a short passage during your RYA Day Skipper course.

    We appreciate you may need a refresher on some things and you should be able to do the following.

    • Prepare a boat for mooring (cleats, knots and mooring lines)
    • Handle sails and trimming (hoist and lower, use of winches)
    • Helming on all points of sail and steer a compass course

    You should also have a working knowledge of chartwork, rules of the road, bouyage, lights and shapes.

  • RYA Coastal Skipper

    The RYA Coastal Skipper sailing course is an ideal stepping stone between the day skipper sailing course and the full RYA/MCA examination Chart Work for RYA Coastal Skipper Sailing Courses in the Solentcourse. It's aimed at more experienced day skippers and will provide the student with the knowledge to be able to complete more demanding coastal passages, sailing by day and night. The course will cover more complex boat handling, pilotage and passage planning. It is recommended that you have already completed 300 sailing miles, 8 night sailing hours with over 15 days on board and 2 days as Skipper, before embarking on this course. You will require navigation skills at the level of Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory.

    After successfuly completing the Coastal Skipper sailing course you will be awarded a RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate, which will enable you to skipper longer coastal passages safely and confidently.

    The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course will teach you the sailing skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht on coastal and offshore passages by day and night. It will build and refine your navigation and boat handling skillls. You should all ready be at good Day Skipper standard and have a good knowledge of navigation including secondary port calculations before taking this course.

    You should have a minimum of 300 sailing miles logged with 15 days on board (2 days as skipper) and 8 night hours.

    • Passage and Pilotage plans
    • Boat handling under power and sail (including sailing onto bouys and MOB)
    • Emergency situations
    • Berthing in various conditions of wind and tide

    During your sailing course you will visit various marinas, harbours and anchorages in and around the Solent, Hampshire.  You will take charge as Skipper for a short passage during the course.
     
    What's included in the Coastal Skipper course

    The RYA Coastal Skipper sailing course, like all our courses, is all inclusive and that include berthing fees and fuel, all accommodation on board and all food eaten on board. Our varied menus mean that not only is the food good (see our Trip Advisor reviews) but we cater for most tastes and special dietery requirements.  Good quality Musto foul weather gear is provided free off charge to ensure you stay warm and dry.

    On board you will find our training vessel fully equipped and extremely comfortable, pillows and pillow cases are provided. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag.

  • RYA Day Skipper 9 Day Combination Course

    This 9 day combination sailing course covers the RYA day skipper theory and practical sailing courses. You will spend the first 2 days on the yacht brushing up on your sailing skills in and around the Solent in Hampshire. Followed by 2 days in the RYA Day skipper 9 day combination course - Solent based, Broad Reach Sailingclassroom where you will learn Chartwork and navigation. The remainder of the time is spent sailing the yacht, where you will cover all aspects of the practical sailing syllabus and the remaining parts of sailing theory.

    This is an ideal way to become a proficient day skipper in the shortest time possible.  This day skipper 9 day sailing course starts on Saturday mornings and finishes on Sunday afternoon. During the course you will be accommodated on board the yacht and your accommodation is included in the price of the sailing course.  You only have to bring your own sleeping bag, pillows and pillow cases are provided. The cost includes all learning material, foul weather gear, if required, and good quality meals provided on board the yacht.

  • RYA Refresher Sailing Course

    The perfect sailing course for those wishing to brush up on skills learnt on previous courses or those working towards the next step on the RYA ladder.   • ICC Course And Exam

    The International Certificate of Competence is aim at yachtsmen who wish to charter aboard but do not hold formal qualifications. The ICC is awarded to those who successfully complete a practical assessment that lasts around 6 hours.
    We offer a ICC weekend where refresher training is given and the assessment conducted on the second day. During the assessment you will be asked to perform various tasks such as Man Over Board drills, coming alongside and mooring to a bouy in various conditions of both wind and tide. You should have a good knowledge of Col Regs and be able to tack and gybe safely and sail on any point of sail.

  • Boat Handling Weekend

    Berthing on a finger pontoonAt Broad Reach Sailing School, we also offer boat handling weekends that are aimed at giving you more confidence with general boat handling under power and sail. We will spend time practicing different berthing situations in the Solent marina including the more "tricky" stuff! We will also look at sailing onto moorings and MOB undersail. Don't be put off if you think you are not ready to start sailing onto a pontoon!! The weekend is for everyone to gain more experience and is based at our Sailing School in the Solent.

  • Yachtmaster Preparation

    Yachmaster Preparation Courses and Exams

    We run preperation for Yachtmaster Exams over a 4 or 5 day period with the exam on the final afternoon evening. The course will prepare you for the exam and is aimed at brushing up existing sailing skills. We will arrange an examiner for you and you will be able to use our training yacht during the exam. You can invite your own crew to help out or call on the help of others on your course. (exam fees are paid directly to the examiner by the student)

     

    Yachtmaster Coastal

    • Previous experience required: 30 days sea time (2 as skipper) 800 miles, 12 night sailing hours. This reduces to 20 days and 400 miles if you hold a RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate. VHF radio operators licence and a recognised first aid certificate.

    This is aimed at more experienced skippers and is a natural progression from the Coastal Skipper Course. During the first couple of days your instructor will asses your existing skills and give you an honest appraisal of your likely performance during the exam. Over the following days your sailing instruction will be tailored to cover any areas of weakness that have been highlighted. You will take charge of the yacht in various situations and become familiar with close quarter manoeuvres both under sail and power. You will practice dealing with emergency situations, navigating in restricted visibility, pilotage plans and skippering techniques.

    After 5 days your instructor will give you a thorough debriefing and you should feel confident in your ability to take the exam should you feel ready to do so.

    Yachtmaster Offshore

    • Previous experience required: 50 days sea time, 2500 miles, including 5 passages over 60 miles (2 as skipper) and including 2 of which have been over night passages. VHF radio operators licence and a recognised first aid certificate.

    To attain the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate of competence candidates must pass a practical examination of the skippering ability. A Yachtmaster is capable of skippering a yacht on longer offshore passages, they are more experienced than Coastal Skippers and can carry out the same things more smoothly and can perform at a high level in arduous conditions.

    The 5 days prior to the exam is run along the same lines as the Coastal Skipper preparation. Your instructor will asses your skills and address any areas over weakness. A high level of boat handling under various conditions of wind and tide is required. Navigation skills should be at the level of Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper theory and a thorough knowledge of collision regulations is expected. Your instructor will tailor the course to suit your individual needs in order to prepare you for when the examiner steps on board.

    During the exam you will be asked to skipper the yacht during a passage and carry out various demonstrations of your skippering and sailing ability.

    This is a 2 day taster course aimed at people who would like to try sailing for the first time. Your instructor will ensure you have an enjoyable weekend and will introduce you to the basics of sailing. By the end of the course you will be able to steer a course and handle rope work and sails.
