RYA Day Skipper Practical Syllabus

The RYA Day Skipper practical course is ideal for sailors who are at a good Competent Crew level and have either completed their Day Skipper theory or have sufficient theory knowledge to the same same level. The course will give you the cofindence to skipper a medium size cruising yacht in known waters, in good weather by day. It will show the best way to tackle tricky berthing situations and how to get the best out of your crew and yacht.

During your course you will visit varoius marinas and anchorages in an around the Solent. All the marinas have exellent facilites and most have free WiFi. You will have an opportunity to "Skipper" a short passage during your course.

We appreciate you may need a refresher with some things, you should be able to.

  • Preparing a boat for mooring (cleats, knots and mooring lines)
  • Sail handling and triming (hoist and lower, use of winches)
  • Helming on all points of sail and steer a compass course

You should also have a working knowledge of chartwork, rules of the road, bouyage, lights and shapes.
