RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Syllabus

The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course will teach you the skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night. It will build on and refine your navigation and boat handling skills. You should already be at a good Day Skipper standard and have a good working knowledge of naigation including secondary port calculations.

You should have a minimum of 300 miles logged with 15 days on board (2 as Skipper) and 8 night hours.

The Course covers

  • Boat handling under power and sail (including sailing onto bouys and MOB)
  • Passage and Pilotage plans
  • Emergency situations
  • Berthing in various condiitions of wind and tide
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Crew and boat management

During your course you will visit various marinas, harbours and anchorages in and around the Solent. You will be required to take charge as Skipper for a short passage.

All the marinas we visit have very good facilities, most with free WiFi.
